You know, when I was young, I used to think I was a bit bland, loud, but bland. School tie and side shed.
During the punk years I kind of followed. You know the people who knew about The Clash first, wrote Adam and the ants graffiti when we all thought they were just a bunch of insects. Those people were ahead of the game, they wore stitched up drainpipes and dressed all in black as a tribute to The Dammed.
I always felt kind of middle class spam valley kind of way. No rebel in me, no doggin school, no safety pins in my nose. Even when I did get into punk it was mainstream, Blondie and The Jam when they hit number one 3 times in a row. My music was starting from a Carpenters, and Neil Diamond standpoint. I took art with artisans and was mediocre. My art was a house with smoke from chimney, theirs was a wall of black with wonderful drawings beneath.
The whole thing was I was a good boy.
Then something seemed to change, as I got older everything changed. I found rebellion suited my style. Seemed to make people laugh. Upset others, usually the ones you don't want to upset. But Hey!! Who cared? As long as my friends found my patter worthwhile. Then I was out there.....left adrift on my own yacht, rebellion.
Now, as I am getting on a touch, it would appear that with all the trappings of middle class - working class happiness,
2.4 kids a loving wife AND a cat..... It would appear I am the cosumate punk rebel to some. Revered and sneered at. Admired for my uniqueness and decried for my irresponsibility. Loved for irreverent wit, and hated when I take it too far. From the funniest guy in the pub, to the wickedest Mr Obnoxious with a drink too much.
But strangely now, I seem to have what I wanted in the mid to late 70's. Street cred. and attitude down by spam valley way.
The punks are all accountants and I'm still shakin it up.
The life they had as leaders was gone with New Romantic ways, they've compromised their standpoints for the masses and now just blend in to conformity. So fuck it, if its brash and bold, and warm then cold, then have it all and don't be told you're different.
